WheelsTV Spotlight: 2023 BMW M2

It’s hard to believe that the BMW M2 has already been around long enough to warrant a second generation, but here we are.

Introduced in 2016, the BMW M2 was a welcome blast of old-school BMW performance in a sea of  SUVs and amidst talks of all-electric futures. In their first drive review, Road & Track wrote, “The M2 is arguably the most important and interesting car that has come from BMW in ages. Philosophically, it’s true to the classic M car philosophy, but it’s not a throwback.” This pretty much sums opinion of the M2 at the time.

The first-generation M2 was a no-compromise performance coupe, and that wasn’t just marketing—it truly was. The M2 boasted a 365-horsepower 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engine, coupled with flared fenders to accommodate its massive tires, making it an unapologetic, hot-rodded version of BMW’s 2-Series coupe.

In 2022, the M2 took a hiatus while BMW launched the redesigned 2-Series, returning in 2023 longer, wider, and more powerful than before.

At first glance, the redesigned M2 exudes an aura of athleticism. Its aggressive stance, defined by muscular lines and flared wheel arches, hints at the raw performance capabilities that lie beneath its sharpened exterior. However, the M2 is not just about looks; it’s about substance.

Under the hood, the BMW M2 packs a punch with its 3-liter M TwinPower Turbo inline-six engine, producing 453 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. Like the prior generation, the 3-liter can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or a quick-shifting 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.

But performance isn’t just about straight-line speed; it’s about the driving experience as a whole. The M2’s agility is unparalleled, thanks to its sophisticated chassis technology and rear-wheel-drive configuration. The standard Active M Differential ensures seamless power delivery to the rear wheels, while the Adaptive M Suspension and M Servotronic steering provide a responsive and engaging driving experience.

The M2’s cockpit is meticulously crafted with the driver in mind, boasting a design that places emphasis on performance and control. It incorporates M-specific displays, controls, and configurations, complemented by the state-of-the-art BMW Curved Display. Owners have the freedom to personalize their driving experience with a curated selection of options that enhance both comfort and style, allowing them to tailor their new BMW M2 to their exact preferences.

When it comes to seating, the 2023 M2 offers a range of choices designed to elevate the driving experience. The redesigned M Sport seats feature enhanced side bolsters, providing optimal support during spirited driving maneuvers. Crafted with precision, these seats are upholstered in luxurious Vernasca leather with perforated surfaces, available in either classic Black or rich Cognac. Adding to the premium feel, the integral head restraints are adorned with an illuminated M logo, a subtle nod to the car’s performance pedigree. For added convenience, the M Sport seats come equipped with electrical adjustment, allowing drivers to find their ideal seating position effortlessly.

The M2 also places a strong emphasis on safety, offering a comprehensive suite of advanced driver-assistance features. These include Park Distance Control with sensors at both the front and rear, Dynamic Cruise Control, Front Collision Warning with brake intervention, and Lane Departure Warning, all provided as standard.

The optional Active Cruise Control system with Stop & Go function (optional on vehicles equipment with the M Steptronic transmission only) maintains the chosen cruising speed while also automatically keeping a safe distance from vehicles travelling ahead, with a choice of four proximity settings.

In today’s automotive landscape, characterized by a sea of bland, automatically shifted crossovers, vehicles like the M2 are becoming increasingly rare. It’s truly unfortunate because the M2 encapsulates a unique fusion of athletic styling, functionality, performance, and cutting-edge technology features.
